Many people are interested in tango (and rightly so 😉) – and ask themselves exactly this question:
Do I need a dance partner just to get started?
The short answer: No, you can learn tango even without a regular partner. And that’s exactly what we do here in Zurich at La Pantera.
Can tango even work without a partner?
Yes, of course. We keep it simple and natural: in class, we don’t stick to fixed partners. Instead, we switch partners regularly. Just as is customary, for example, at the milonga (tango dance evening) that takes place every Friday night here in Zurich. Tango is a living art form that thrives on variety and improvisation.
This means:
- You dance with different people
- You learn to adapt more quickly
- You become more confident at leading or following
Especially in the beginning, this is actually an advantage. You develop a better sense of movement, rhythm, and connection.

Why many people choose to start tango on their own
At first, many people think they need someone to help them sign up. Before the course starts, our phone lines are regularly jammed with calls about this crucial question. 😉 However, our experience has shown that in practice, it’s often the exact opposite, and the situation is totally relaxed.
A large number of participants come alone. Why?
- more flexibility
- no dependence on another person
- a more open learning environment
- faster progress
And honestly: When you dance tango, you automatically meet new people. It just can't be any other way.
Is it awkward to come alone?
That’s a common concern. It’s understandable, and you’re certainly not alone in feeling that way.
The reality, however, is this: it’s over in just a few minutes. The atmosphere in our classes is designed to help everyone feel at ease right away. No one is thrown in at the deep end. Everything happens step by step. No one is left out or ignored.
And: You're not the only one coming alone. Quite the opposite.
What happens during a first tango trial lesson?
The trial class is designed to help you get started in a relaxed way. You’ll get:
- A clear introduction
- Basic steps
- A feel for the tango
- A glimpse into the class
No pressure. No obligation. You can take your time deciding whether you want to continue. Best of all: you can try it out anytime.

What is the advantage of learning without a fixed partner?
Maybe you have a lot of questions swirling around in your head right now? Are there really any benefits to coming alone? That can’t be true. But it’s an interesting point that many people underestimate. If you always dance with the same person, you tend to adapt a lot to that specific person.
If you switch partners:
- you'll learn faster
- you'll become more flexible
- you'll gain a deeper understanding of the tango
This makes a big difference in the long run, and you'll feel more at ease at tango dance events in other places because you're used to it.
Who is "Tango Without a Partner" particularly suited for?
Tango without a regular partner is ideal for:
- Beginners with no dance experience
- People who want to jump right in
- People who want to meet new people
- Anyone who wants to improve their dancing skills and already has some tango experience
